CageFreeSA
In South Africa, 86% of eggs in various establishments come from caged hens, a pressing issue that raises ethical and environmental concerns. We're urging the retail sector in South Africa to commit to cage-free eggs, promoting compassion and sustainability. Our collective voice can make a difference, offering hope for a brighter future for all beings.

The Issue of Caged Eggs and Why We Should Care
In South Africa, a concerning reality looms over our dining tables, in hotels, restaurants, and retailer shelves. Egg-laying hens are amongst the most abused animals bred for food. 95 % of South Africa’s layer hens are confined to cages the size of an A4 sheet of paper. These battery hens live in cramped, unhealthy conditions and often never see natural light. Hens enduring such conditions suffer needlessly, unable to express natural behaviors and often experiencing immense physical and emotional distress. As conscientious consumers and advocates for animal welfare, it is imperative that we care deeply about this issue. We cannot ignore the inhumane treatment of these animals or the environmental and health consequences tied to intensive egg farming. It's a call to break free from cruelty and strive for a more compassionate and sustainable future for all beings.
Industry has made no movement in two decades to move (egg-laying hens) layer hens out of cages. Only 1% of the national flock is cage-free and 4 % is free-range.
Taking Action for a Cage-Free Commitment
We refuse to stand idly by while this issue persists. We are urging prominent players in South Africa's retail sector, to take a bold and compassionate step forward. Our collective action is aimed at encouraging this sector to make a cage-free commitment. We call upon them to join the global movement advocating for the welfare of farm animals by sourcing eggs only from suppliers that prioritize cage-free and humane practices. By doing so, companies can set a powerful example for the industry and align with the values of a society that cares about animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and ethical consumption. Together, we can be a driving force for change.
The Impact of Our Success and Its Importance
Should our call for a cage-free commitment be successful, the implications would be profound and far-reaching. Not only would it signify a monumental win for animal welfare, but it would also lead to significant improvements in the living conditions of countless hens. These birds would be free to move, spread their wings, and engage in natural behaviors, enhancing their well-being and quality of life. Additionally, adopting cage-free practices contributes to a more sustainable and ethical food system, reducing the environmental footprint associated with intensive egg farming. Our success in urging the retail sector to embrace a cage-free commitment represents a pivotal step towards a future where compassion, sustainability, and conscious consumer choices harmoniously coexist, benefiting not only animals but our society as a whole. Together, we can uplift lives, break free from cruelty, and create a better future for all beings.
